The Centre for <strong>International</strong> Crime Prevention <strong>of</strong> the Secretariat <strong>of</strong> theUnited Nations is authorized and designated to serve at the will and under the directsupervision <strong>of</strong> the Conference <strong>of</strong> the Parties as the Secretariat for the Conference <strong>of</strong>the Parties in carrying out the activities described in article 23, paragraph 3, <strong>of</strong> <strong>this</strong>Convention and shall convene the first meeting <strong>of</strong> the Conference.“2. The Centre for <strong>International</strong> Crime Prevention shall assist the Conference<strong>of</strong> the Parties in preparing the reports assessing implementation, described in article23, paragraph 3 (d) <strong>of</strong> <strong>this</strong> Convention and shall provide the Conference <strong>of</strong> theParties with periodic reports on its activities under that article;“3. The Centre for <strong>International</strong> Crime Prevention shall, upon request, assistStates Parties in preparing the reports described in article 23, paragraph 3 (e), <strong>of</strong> <strong>this</strong>Convention on implementation <strong>of</strong> measures for which the Convention provides;“4. The Centre for <strong>International</strong> Crime Prevention shall make arrangements forsessions <strong>of</strong> the Conference <strong>of</strong> the Parties, provide services for those sessions asrequired and ensure necessary coordination with the secretariats <strong>of</strong> other relevantinternational organizations.”Rolling text (A/AC.254/4/Rev.6)“[Article 23 bis“Secretariat 4“1. The Secretary-General shall convene the first session <strong>of</strong> the Conference <strong>of</strong>the Parties to the Convention and shall designate the Centre for <strong>International</strong> CrimePrevention <strong>of</strong> the Secretariat <strong>of</strong> the United Nations to serve as the secretariat for andat the direction <strong>of</strong> the Conference.“2. The secretariat shall:“(a) Assist the Conference <strong>of</strong> the Parties in carrying out the activities describedin article 23 <strong>of</strong> <strong>this</strong> Convention and make arrangements for and provide the necessaryservices for the sessions <strong>of</strong> the Conference;4This article envisaged the tasks <strong>of</strong> the secretariat in relation to the work <strong>of</strong> the conference <strong>of</strong> the parties. After theAd Hoc Committee had discussed the question <strong>of</strong> technical assistance, it would be necessary to consider whether languageaddressing the role <strong>of</strong> the secretariat in relation to such assistance needed to be added to <strong>this</strong> article.
