States Parties shall provide to or share with each other, as appropriate, relevantscientific and technological information useful to law enforcement authorities,in order to enhance one another’s ability to prevent, detect and investigate the illicitmanufacturing of and trafficking in firearms, ammunition[, explosives] 2 and otherrelated materials and prosecute the persons involved in those illicit activities.1Although the convention was likely to include a general provision on the exchange of information, a provision dealingwith that issue in the firearms protocol was recommended. The final form of this provision would need to take intoaccount the corresponding article(s) in the convention. At the seventh session of the Ad Hoc Committee, it was agreed thatit was necessary for the protocol to deal with exchange of information in the context of illicit firearm trafficking morespecifically than in the corresponding articles of the convention. Many delegations also expressed the view that the textcould not be finalized until the text of the convention had been negotiated.2Addition proposed by Mexico (see A/AC.254/5/Add.1 and Corr.1).3Alternative proposed by Colombia.
