To the Under Secretary of State Home Office,
Aliens Department
[London], 2.2.1937
Ms. o. U., ÖNB
Dear Sir,
as the enclosed passport shows my permit to stay in Great Britain expires on February
10 th .
Since I came to this country in 1933 I have spent about half part of the time in
England and half part in my native country, Austria. I propose to go on living partly
here and partly abroad on the same footing but for private reasons, chiefly because
of the situation in Central Europe and my intention to have my son educated in an
English school, I want to have my domicile in Great Britain. I beg to apply to you,
therefore, for the grant of a permanent permit.
I do not propose to apply for a labour permit. Books and other literary works of
mine have been published in Great Britain, USA, France, Germany, Italy, Austria,
Switzerland, Cechoslovakia [sic], Holland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Yougoslavia
[sic] and Poland. My earnings are therefore not confined to this country and I am
spending here part of the money earned abroad. Since my last report to you my
Zaharoff biography published in London with Messrs. Allen & Unwin has gone into
a second and third imprint and the American edition has been on the best seller list
of the USA. The English edition of my new historical novel „The Queens Doctor“
published with Messrs. Victor Gollancz Ltd. has been awarded the London Book
Society Recommendation and at present it is a best seller in Denmark. The American
edition is just out, several continental editions have been published already or are
going to be published. The Capitol Film Ltd. of London announces for 1937 the
production of „Dynamite Nobel“ a film based on a story of mine. A new historical
novel of mine will be finished in a month or two and published this autumn.
My earnings drawn from the works mentioned above during the last 30 months
have approximately been as follows:
Zaharoff biography L 1300
Queens Doctor L 790
Dynamite Nobel L 800
L 2890
This figure does not include the royalties due to me per December 31st, 1936, the
amount of which is unknown to me as the accounts have not yet been worked out
by the publishers nor is my new novel mortgaged by any advance. I have therefore
reasonable expectation to go on earning my living on the level which has been
practically steady for the last ten years. […]
