This activity provides for the safe and secure long-term storage <strong>of</strong> approximately 3,000 kilograms<br />

<strong>of</strong> weapons-grade plutonium and 10,000 kilograms <strong>of</strong> HEU in spent fuel from the shutdown<br />

BN-350 fast breeder reactor in Kazakhstan. <strong>The</strong> BN-350 shipments were completed in November<br />

2010; and these minimal funds will support the project close out activities and verify all security<br />

systems are fully operational.<br />

• International Material Protection 41,463 57,000 50,000<br />

This activity works in cooperation with foreign counterparts and international agencies to install<br />

security upgrades on high-priority, vulnerable nuclear and radiological materials located at civilian<br />

sites outside the United States.<br />

In <strong>FY</strong> <strong>2012</strong>, GTRI will complete security upgrades at an additional 43 research reactor and<br />

radiological buildings, resulting in a cumulative total <strong>of</strong> 822 international buildings secured. Efforts<br />

also include working with the International Atomic <strong>Energy</strong> Agency (IAEA), foreign regulators, and<br />

sites to support the sustainability <strong>of</strong> previously installed security upgrades at 779 buildings in over<br />

70 countries.<br />

• Domestic Material Protection (Homeland Security) 35,322 25,147 51,000<br />

This activity works in close cooperation with Federal, State, and local agencies, and private industry<br />

to install security upgrades on high-priority nuclear and radiological materials located at civilian<br />

sites in the United States to prevent theft.<br />

In <strong>FY</strong> <strong>2012</strong>, GTRI will complete security upgrades at an additional 115 research reactor and<br />

radiological buildings, resulting in a cumulative total <strong>of</strong> 417 domestic buildings secured. Efforts<br />

also include working with Federal, State, and local authorities and the sites to support the<br />

sustainability <strong>of</strong> previously installed security upgrades at 302 buildings and conduct 24 Alarm<br />

Response Training sessions for over 900 first responders.<br />
