• Develop and deploy NDT methods for pre-service, in-service, and materials testing<br />

inspections to reduce time and cost, ensure quality, and minimize radiation exposure to<br />

inspection personnel.<br />

• Transfer equipment to the new Materials Research and Technology Complex at Bettis and the<br />

Materials Development Facility at KAPL to support materials processing, science autoclave<br />

testing and machine shop services, and initiate operations.<br />

Evaluation and Servicing promotes the Naval Reactors Program tradition <strong>of</strong> safety, reliability,<br />

and technical excellence through the operation, maintenance, and testing <strong>of</strong> land-based test<br />

facilities. A key focus <strong>of</strong> these facilities is to enhance fleet performance through testing and<br />

examination <strong>of</strong> materials, components, and new designs under actual operating conditions. This<br />

effort includes the design <strong>of</strong> fuel servicing and component disposal equipment, evaluating and<br />

resolving design issues, plus the planning and execution <strong>of</strong> defueling, lay-up, and disassembly<br />

work. Evaluation and Servicing work is concentrated in the following areas: (1) Routine<br />

Operations and Maintenance, (2) Routine Environmental Remediation, (3) Servicing,<br />

(4) Expended Core Processing and Examination, and (5) Prototype Inactivation.<br />

Routine Operations and Maintenance: This work involves operating the Naval Reactors<br />

prototypes in a safe and reliable manner to support testing and evaluation <strong>of</strong> new components,<br />

systems, applications, and designs. <strong>The</strong> work also supports preventive maintenance, upgrades<br />

and modifications on the prototypes. Funding has been identified in the estimated amount <strong>of</strong><br />

$63,200,000 to support this work in <strong>FY</strong> <strong>2012</strong>, including the following:<br />

• Operate the prototypes for testing and maintenance at a utilization factor <strong>of</strong> equal to or greater<br />

than 90 percent.<br />

• Perform depletion and testing <strong>of</strong> the cores in Modifications and Additions to Reactor Facilities<br />

(MARF) and S8G prototypes.<br />

• Conduct MARF maximum power tests at specified intervals.<br />

• Conduct MARF and S8G materials stress tests.<br />

• Complete periodic MARF and S8G routine maintenance shutdowns.<br />

• Deplete the S8G reactor core consistent with approved testing and plant controlling<br />

maintenance.<br />

• Install and test new components having future fleet application, including advanced electrical<br />

breakers and power converters.<br />

• Perform life evaluations and inspections <strong>of</strong> primary plant components including in-situ<br />

investigations <strong>of</strong> primary and secondary systems.<br />

• Prepare design upgrades and maintenance procedures that promote operating improvements.<br />

• Execute necessary repairs and upgrades to the prototypes.<br />
