W78 Life Extension Study 0 26,000 51,087<br />

<strong>The</strong> W78 Study addresses the nuclear explosives package for commonality amongst the<br />

Mk12A re-entry vehicle/Mk5 re-entry body; and evaluation <strong>of</strong> safety and security<br />

enhancement options, extend service life, and alignment with the major DoD component<br />

(fuze) acquisition program. <strong>The</strong> study will also consider the option <strong>of</strong> developing a<br />

common ICBM/SLBM warhead that will include the W88.<br />

<strong>FY</strong> <strong>2012</strong> mission scope includes: (1) begin Phase 6.2/2A <strong>of</strong> the W78 Life Extension<br />

Study (LES) consistent with direction in the Stockpile Management Program and the<br />

2010 NPR; (2) evaluate the nuclear explosives package for commonality amongst the<br />

Mk12A re-entry vehicle and the Mk5 RBA, evaluate safety and security enhancements,<br />

extend service life, and align with major DoD component (e.g., fuze) acquisition<br />

program.<br />

W80 Stockpile Systems 20,107 34,193 44,444<br />

<strong>The</strong> W80-1 is a strategic warhead integrated into the Air Launched Cruise Missile. <strong>The</strong><br />

United States Air Force deploys this weapon on the B-52.<br />

In accordance with National Requirements Documents and/or Directive Schedules, <strong>FY</strong> <strong>2012</strong><br />

mission scope includes:<br />

(1) Weapon Maintenance: produce LLCs/perform LLCEs on GTSs and NGs as required;<br />

(2) Weapon Surveillance: conduct surveillance activities to provide the National<br />

Laboratory Directors with robust state-<strong>of</strong>-health nuclear weapon data necessary to<br />

complete Weapon Reliability and Annual Assessment Reports, to include: disassembly<br />

and inspection, system-level laboratory and joint flight testing, component and material<br />

evaluations, and platform compatibility and testing activities;<br />

(3) Weapon Assessment and Support: conduct weapon assessment and certification<br />

activities necessary to complete Weapon Reliability and Annual Assessment Reports, to<br />

include: laboratory/site testing and analysis, trainer refurbishments, POG and DoD<br />

safety studies, significant finding investigations; and<br />

(4) Development Studies/Capability Improvements: conduct feasibility studies as<br />

required in conjunction with the DoD, provide NG subassembly and timer driver<br />

development lots as well as system qualification and transportation testing, design,<br />

develop, and produce timers, detonators and NGs at Sandia National Laboratories to<br />

meet FPU in <strong>FY</strong> 2014, and complete RPD requirement to revisit LEP possibilities in<br />

conjunction with the DoD as well as NPR direction to pursue the same. <strong>The</strong> NG<br />

<strong>FY</strong> 2014 FPU is essential to ensure timely deliveries.<br />
