(3) Weapon Assessment and Support: conduct weapon assessment and certification<br />

activities necessary to complete Weapon Reliability and Annual Assessment Reports, to<br />

include: laboratory/site testing and analysis, trainer refurbishments, POG and DoD<br />

safety studies, significant finding investigations; and<br />

(4) Development Studies/Capability Improvements: W76 studies and capabilities are<br />

focused toward the on-going LEP.<br />

W78 Stockpile Systems 52,167 85,898 109,518<br />

<strong>The</strong> W78 is a strategic warhead integrated into the Mk12A re-entry vehicle. <strong>The</strong> United<br />

States Air Force deploys this weapon on the Minuteman III Intercontinental Ballistic Missile<br />

(ICBM). <strong>The</strong> program separates into two subcategories: (1) System Sustainment and<br />

(2) Life Extension Study.<br />

In accordance with National Requirements Documents and/or Directive Schedules,<br />

<strong>FY</strong> <strong>2012</strong> mission scope includes:<br />

(1) Weapon Maintenance: produce LLCs/perform LLCEs on GTSs and NGs as<br />

required; execute repair, maintenance, and replacement <strong>of</strong> aging weapon<br />

components, procurement <strong>of</strong> new reservoir forgings and valves to replace GTSs and<br />

production <strong>of</strong> new NGs;<br />

(2) Weapon Surveillance: conduct surveillance activities to provide the National<br />

Laboratory Directors with robust state-<strong>of</strong>-health nuclear weapon data necessary to<br />

complete Weapon Reliability and Annual Assessment Reports, these activities<br />

include: disassembly and inspection, system-level laboratory and joint flight testing,<br />

component and material evaluations, and platform compatibility and testing activities,<br />

implementation <strong>of</strong> non-destructive laser gas sampling at Y-12 to enhance existing<br />

surveillance techniques,<br />

(3) Weapon Assessment and Support: conduct weapon assessment and certification<br />

activities necessary to complete Weapon Reliability and Annual Assessment Reports,<br />

to include: laboratory/site testing and analysis, trainer refurbishments, POG and DoD<br />

safety studies and significant finding investigations; and<br />

(4) Development Studies/Capability Improvements: conduct feasibility studies as<br />

required in conjunction with the DoD.<br />
