personnel. Funding has been identified in the estimated amount <strong>of</strong> $18,000,000 to support this<br />

work in <strong>FY</strong> <strong>2012</strong>, including the following:<br />

• Document reactor safety deliverables and support Nuclear Regulatory Commission and<br />

Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards reviews.<br />

• Perform reactor safety analyses in support <strong>of</strong> new reactor plants.<br />

• Provide shielding review <strong>of</strong> issues associated with advanced reactor plant designs.<br />

• Prepare, review, and update Prototype Safety Assessment Reports (SARs) to ensure no undue<br />

threat to the environment and general public and to document the safety basis for the<br />

prototypes.<br />

• Develop advanced safety analysis codes for evaluation <strong>of</strong> reactor plants.<br />

• Develop radiation shield designs for each new plant design and radioactive material handling<br />

facilities and verify their effectiveness through shield surveys during initial operation.<br />

• Develop new shield design requirements, methods, and shielding materials for advanced plant<br />

designs to improve their affordability.<br />

• Provide casualty training with the use <strong>of</strong> Reactor Safety Training Manuals.<br />

Radiological Controls, Environmental, Safety, and Quality Efforts: This work focuses on<br />

conducting radiological control, environmental, and safety operations necessary to protect<br />

laboratory employees, minimize release <strong>of</strong> hazardous effluents to the environment, and comply<br />

with all applicable regulations. Funding has been identified in the estimated amount <strong>of</strong><br />

$69,500,000 to support this work in <strong>FY</strong> <strong>2012</strong>, including the following:<br />

• Continue to survey and document radiological conditions; train personnel for all phases <strong>of</strong><br />

radiological work and environmental work.<br />

• Continue to review radiological work procedures, conduct a radiological health program, and<br />

conduct emergency preparedness program.<br />

• Continue to store, process, and ship radioactive material/waste in accordance with all<br />

applicable regulations.<br />

• Continue to maintain strict accountability and handling methods for nuclear fuel.<br />

• Continue to ensure compliance with all applicable safety and environmental regulations.<br />

• Continue to ensure compliance with the laboratory quality assurance program through<br />

training, consulting, facilitating, lab self-assessment and process improvement, inspection,<br />

auditing, and vendor oversight.<br />

• Minimize the production and safely dispose <strong>of</strong> waste in accordance with applicable<br />

regulations to ensure the protection <strong>of</strong> employees, the public and the environment.<br />

• Provide quality engineering and inspection support to include training and qualification <strong>of</strong><br />

inspection personnel.<br />
