Drugs Work)<br />

This course aims to provide appropriate training for workers whose primary role is<br />

to reduce the harm associated with the use <strong>of</strong> alcohol and other drugs.<br />

Employment in the community services sector in areas that provide clinical<br />

support services, community development, health promotion and prevention<br />

services.<br />

Course duration<br />

One year full-time.<br />

Course subjects<br />

Introduction to the alcohol and other drug sector:<br />

Provide first point <strong>of</strong> contact for potential clients.<br />

Support people with alcohol and/or other drug issues.<br />

Provide services to clients with alcohol and/or other drug issues.<br />

Work with clients who are intoxicated.<br />

Provide needle exchange services.<br />

Provide alcohol and other drug withdrawal services.<br />

Entry requirements<br />

There are no formal entry requirements. However, preference will be given to<br />

those currently employed in the industry, those who have past experience as<br />

volunteers or in paid employment, and those with personal experience in caring<br />

for people with alcohol and/or other drug issues.<br />

Certificate II in Community<br />

Services (Children's Services)<br />

The Certificate II in Community Services (Children's Services) is part <strong>of</strong> a suite <strong>of</strong><br />

courses that provide a comprehensive package <strong>of</strong> training to meet the needs <strong>of</strong><br />

the children's services industry and reflects the competency standards required.<br />

The course has national accreditation. Graduates <strong>of</strong> this course can apply to<br />

articulate with credits into the Certificate III and Diploma child care courses.<br />

The course can be undertaken by open learning. It contains the first modules <strong>of</strong><br />

the Certificate III and the Diploma. Students are supported by workshops, phone<br />

tutoring and study using manuals. Streams <strong>of</strong> this course are adapted for those<br />

interested in Home Based Care (Family Day Care) as well as for those interested<br />

in Centre Based Care. This course is also conducted in schools as a vocational<br />

program for Year 11 and 12.<br />

This course provides training for a challenging career with children in the home<br />

based environment.<br />

Course duration<br />

Six months full-time, up to two years part-time.<br />

Structure<br />

This course is <strong>of</strong>fered in a range <strong>of</strong> ways. This includes a flexible delivery option<br />

which allows students to enrol in the entire course (which can be completed in 6<br />

months) or in individual modules. There is no time limit on how long the course<br />

can take to complete. Students are required to complete 90 hours practical work<br />

with children across the two years. This course is also conducted for secondary<br />

school students, generally over Years 11 and 12. Arrangements can be made for<br />

secondary school students to be taught as part <strong>of</strong> a school cluster at a secondary<br />

school or on the Croydon or Prahran campuses. Further training is available<br />

through <strong>Swinburne</strong>'s: Certificate III in Community Services (Children's Services).<br />

and the Diploma <strong>of</strong> Community Services (Children's Services) which is recognised<br />

as the qualification for Level 3 child care workers i.e. fully qualified pr<strong>of</strong>essionals<br />

under the Children's Services regulations.<br />

The Certificate III Children's Services is a part <strong>of</strong> a suite <strong>of</strong> courses which provide<br />

a comprehensive package <strong>of</strong> training to meet the needs <strong>of</strong> the children's services<br />

industry, and reflects the competency standards as outlined in the Community<br />

Services Training Packages. <strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>University</strong> is the largest training package<br />

provider <strong>of</strong> children's services courses in Victoria.<br />

The course provides training for a challenging career with young children aged<br />

from 0-6 years. It also provides training for those who wish to work in before<br />

school/after school and vacation care with children 5-12 years. This course has<br />

extensive credits into the Diploma <strong>of</strong> Community Services (Children's Services).<br />

Graduates can apply to enter the Diploma course with advanced standing.<br />

Employment in a range <strong>of</strong> children's services including Long Day Care (0-6 years),<br />

Occasional Care (0-6 years) and in kindergartens and pre-schools as assistants.<br />

The course has national accreditation, which allows graduates the opportunity to<br />

apply for work throughout most States/Territories <strong>of</strong> Australia. Graduates <strong>of</strong> this<br />

course are recognised in the award as Level 2 Child Care workers.<br />
