Aims & Objectives<br />

This module provides students with the ability to use a graphical user interface<br />

operating system to run s<strong>of</strong>tware on a microcomputer, using keyboard and mouse. They<br />

learn how to manage files and directories using a graphic disk management program to<br />

create, copy, delete, move and modify them, how to run multiple applications, and how<br />

to access help.<br />

This module is more advanced that Module ITH202, and it is intended for students who<br />

have previous exposure to GUI environments. It gives them the ability to use a graphical<br />

user interface operating system to manage a microcomputer, and to install and run<br />

applications. It covers GUI customisation, and using the print manager to install,<br />

configure and connectto printers, and to manage documents sentto them.<br />

Graphical User Interface<br />

This module builds on work covered in Module ITH303.ltaliows students with some<br />

GUI skills to configure an environmentto suit particular requirements and optimise a<br />

system for best performance. It covers loading and configuring driver s<strong>of</strong>tware for<br />

sound and video hardware, configuring memory and secondary storage, implementing<br />

security functions, locating, installing and configuring utility s<strong>of</strong>tware, setting priorities<br />

for multi-tasking applications, and using data exchange facilities.<br />

Aims & Objectives<br />

This module enables students to carry out tasks involving the regular maintenance <strong>of</strong> PC<br />

systems, to support the productivity <strong>of</strong> system users. It assumes that they already<br />

have a working knowledge <strong>of</strong> command line and graphical user interfaces, and<br />

introduces a systematic method to identify and rectify problems. It also covers hard<br />

disk organisation and systematic backup procedures.<br />

This subject develops the skills <strong>of</strong> oral and written analysis and criticism. Reading texts<br />

enables discussion which examines the perspectives and values <strong>of</strong>film makers and the<br />

society <strong>of</strong> which they are a part. Films and written texts are treated as cultural<br />

documents which embody the values and views <strong>of</strong> the dominant culture or reflect the<br />

views or experiences <strong>of</strong> minority groups. It isthe identification <strong>of</strong> these values and<br />

perspectives, the ways in which they are conveyed, their influence on audiences and<br />

their constructing and reflecting cultural experiences which is the focus <strong>of</strong> the subject.<br />
