Entry requirements<br />
There are no formal entry requirements, however, applicants need to satisfy the<br />
following criteria:<br />
Demonstrated interest in and suitability for work in the children's services<br />
field.<br />
Entry competencies which reflect the starting point for course delivery.<br />
Physical and psychological health necessary to meet course requirements,<br />
including practicum.<br />
Demonstrated maturity including ability to be responsible for the care <strong>of</strong><br />
children.<br />
Note: Persons <strong>of</strong> Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background and persons <strong>of</strong><br />
non-English speaking background are encouraged to apply.<br />
Applicants working in the child care industry will be given priority, provided they<br />
meet other selection criteria.<br />

Applications should be submitted by mid November 2001. Applications received<br />
after this date may be considered. Applicants must submit their Application Form<br />
direct to the campus <strong>of</strong> their first choice. In addition, applicants will be required to<br />
attend one <strong>of</strong> the compulsory information/testing sessions at either the Croydon<br />
or the Prahran campus. Applicants will also be required to attend an interview on<br />
a date to be notified.<br />

The Diploma <strong>of</strong> Community Services (Children's Services)- Centre Based Care is<br />
designed to provide the skills, knowledge and understanding required for those<br />
who want to work with children as fully qualified child care pr<strong>of</strong>essionals.<br />
Graduates provide care for the social. emotional, physical and educational needs<br />
<strong>of</strong> infants and children, specialising in children 0-6 years. They also gain<br />
knowledge <strong>of</strong> development <strong>of</strong> children from six to twelve years and learn to work<br />
closely with parents in fostering children's development.<br />
Work in the child care field is both demanding and extremely rewarding. Those<br />
seeking careers in child care should enjoy being with children. Desirable qualities<br />
for this work are patience, understanding, imagination, cheerfulness, energy,<br />
adaptability and a willingness to take responsibility. Child carers must also be<br />
physically fit as they are on their feet a good deal <strong>of</strong> the time, are <strong>of</strong>ten required<br />
to lift and carry children and must be able to provide a standard <strong>of</strong> care consistent<br />
with the Victorian Children's Services Regulations 1998.<br />
The child care industry is a projected growth area, with graduates gaining one<br />
hundred per cent employment at present. This course has national accreditation,<br />
which allows graduates the opportunity to apply for work throughout Australia.<br />
Many graduates also work for a period overseas.<br />

Career opportunities<br />
The majority <strong>of</strong> graduates work as fully qualified pr<strong>of</strong>essionals in child care<br />
centres where they are responsible for providing a program <strong>of</strong> care and education<br />
to children under six. They may work independently or in a supervisory role with<br />
other child care assistants. Some graduates gain positions in family day care<br />
schemes, infant care settings, private homes, pre-school play centres, out <strong>of</strong><br />
school hour programs and some work as aides with children with special needs.<br />
Future career paths lead to management and co-ordination positions in child and<br />
family services.<br />
Graduates <strong>of</strong> the Diploma <strong>of</strong> Community Services (Children's Services)- Centre<br />
Based Care currently receive up to three semester's credit into the Bachelor <strong>of</strong><br />
Early Childhood Studies <strong>of</strong>fered by the School <strong>of</strong> Early Childhood Studies,<br />
Melbourne <strong>University</strong>. Additional credits are currently being negotiated with<br />
Melbourne <strong>University</strong> and RMIT. Child care graduates are also eligible for<br />
significant credits in <strong>Swinburne</strong>'s Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts and Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Social Science<br />
degrees. Other credits can be negotiated at Victoria <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Technology.<br />
<strong>Swinburne</strong> is the largest provider <strong>of</strong> child care courses in Victoria.<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essional recognition<br />
This course has national accreditation which allows graduates the opportunity to<br />
