This course teaches the skills and knowledge needed by occupational health and<br />
safety personnel and by those whose work encompasses some parts <strong>of</strong><br />
occupational health and safety. It should meet the needs <strong>of</strong> business and industry.<br />
Aims & Objectives<br />
The course aims to give students:<br />
A working knowledge <strong>of</strong> the current OHS Act, its regulations, Codes <strong>of</strong><br />
Practice and Advisory Standards.<br />
A description <strong>of</strong> the consequences <strong>of</strong> exposure to health hazards at work.<br />
An understanding <strong>of</strong> the skills required to recognise, evaluate and manage<br />
health and safety hazards in the workplace.<br />
An understanding <strong>of</strong> the skills required to administer various occupational<br />
health and safety functions including health promotion, compensation,<br />
rehabilitation, planning, policy development and ethics.<br />

Career opportunities<br />
This course is recognised nationally. In general the Certificate III provides training<br />
for line supervisors and safety representatives. The Certificate IV is aimed at<br />
higher level supervisors, assistant safety <strong>of</strong>ficers or representatives. The Diploma<br />
is suitable for lower to middle managers who have a major role in OHS.<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essional recognition<br />
Successful completion <strong>of</strong> the Diploma plus five years appropriate experience is<br />
required for admission to Member grade <strong>of</strong> the Safety Institute <strong>of</strong> Australia.<br />
Graduates <strong>of</strong> the Diploma without the required experience may apply for the<br />
Associate Grade <strong>of</strong> the Safety Institute.<br />
Course duration<br />
Certificate III: one year part-time.<br />
Certificate IV: two years part-time.<br />
Diploma: three years part-time.<br />
Structure<br />
These courses are <strong>of</strong>fered on a part-time basis with most classes running in the<br />
evenings. Single modules can also be studied.<br />
The Certificate III is made up <strong>of</strong> 11 modules totalling 340 hours.<br />
The Certificate IV is made up <strong>of</strong> 13 core modules totalling 380 hours and a variety<br />
<strong>of</strong> electives totalling 250 hours.<br />
