The Diploma in Horticulture provides students with the skills and abilities<br />

appropriate to meet the needs <strong>of</strong> the horticulture industry. The elective units make<br />

up the substantive course content and will develop the essential specific skills<br />

required to undertake the many vital functions required <strong>of</strong> people employed in the<br />

horticulture industry. Included are competencies relating to general horticultural<br />

practices such as plant nutrition, plant health, propagation and recognition <strong>of</strong><br />

plants, products and services, as well as competencies relating to business<br />

management and administration.<br />

The essential units are designed to develop the students' generic workplace skills,<br />

so highly valued by employers, which relate particularly to understanding industry<br />

and health and safety requirements. Collecting, analysing and organising<br />

information, solving problems and using technology are also important attributes<br />

for employees in the horticulture industry. These key competencies, along with<br />

others, are integrated into the-learning and practical activities.<br />

This course is suitable for school leavers who have a demonstrated commitment<br />

to horticulture and wish to pursue a career within the nursery, landscape, parks<br />

and gardens and floriculture industries. It is also suitable for those people who<br />

are already working in the horticulture industry and wish to upgrade or gain<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional qualifications.<br />

This course is designed to enable students to:<br />

Develop technical and practical skills to enable the student to operate across<br />

a range <strong>of</strong> horticultural situations in a pr<strong>of</strong>essional capacity.<br />

Understand the discipline and specialist knowledge <strong>of</strong> horticultural<br />

Course duration<br />

Two years full-time or four to six years part-time.<br />

Structure<br />

The course involves three core subjects plus a minimum <strong>of</strong> ten elective<br />

competencies. The course is competency based, which means that students will<br />

need to demonstrate that they can actually perform a range <strong>of</strong> practical tasks to<br />

industry standards. The commercially accredited nursery complex and field<br />

nursery provides an excellent facility for this practical training, and students are<br />

required to undertake workplace activities to enhance their practical skill<br />

development.<br />

Entry requirements<br />

Satisfactory completion <strong>of</strong> an appropriate Victorian Year 12 or its equivalent, or<br />

mature age. There are no prerequisite studies for this course.<br />

Natural resource management involves the use, maintenance, conservation and<br />

effective management <strong>of</strong> our natural resources including flora, fauna and water.<br />

Since European settlement. these resources have been poorly managed, and we<br />

now face serious issues such as soil structure decline, water pollution and<br />

threatened flora and fauna species.<br />

Aims & Objectives<br />

This course aims to develop a broad knowledge in environmental science and<br />

specialises in the development <strong>of</strong> management strategies for the sustainable use<br />

<strong>of</strong> our resources.<br />
