<strong>TAFE</strong> Courses I Health and Human Services 1103<br />
Structure<br />
Full-time students attend classes approximately twenty-five hours per week for<br />
seventy per cent <strong>of</strong> each year. They spend thirty hours per week gaining<br />
experience in a range <strong>of</strong> practical settings for thirty per cent <strong>of</strong> the year.<br />
At the Prahran campus, part-time students will attend classes one day per week,<br />
between 1.30pm and 8.30pm in <strong>2002</strong>. Attendance at a few Saturday workshops<br />
or block release weekdays may be required. Some study is done <strong>of</strong>f-campus.<br />
At the Croydon campus part-time students will attend classes one day per week in<br />
<strong>2002</strong>. Part-time students working in day care centres can usually complete most<br />
placements in their own workplace. They need to be available to undertake a<br />
twenty to forty day placement during their course outside their centres at times<br />
set by the <strong>University</strong>. Part-time students not working in day care centres need to<br />
be available to undertake approximately twenty days <strong>of</strong> placement each year.<br />
Most placements can be undertaken on either a two day a week or a four day a<br />
week basis.<br />

Entry requirements<br />
Satisfactory completion <strong>of</strong> an appropriate Victorian Year 12 or its equivalent, or<br />
Alternative Category Entry. All applicants need to demonstrate the following<br />
criteria:<br />
1. Demonstrated interest in and suitability for work in children's services field.<br />
2. Entry competencies which reflect the starting point for course delivery.<br />
3. Physical and psychological health necessary to meet course requirements<br />
including practicum.<br />
4. Demonstrated maturity including ability to be responsible for the care <strong>of</strong><br />
children.<br />
Application procedure<br />
Full-time applicants must apply through VTAC (Victorian Tertiary Admissions<br />
Centre). Applicants must also complete a child care application form.<br />
Part-time applicants must complete a Child Care application form only.<br />
Child care application forms are available from <strong>Swinburne</strong>.<br />
All applicants attend a compulsory information session at one <strong>of</strong> the <strong>TAFE</strong><br />
institutions <strong>of</strong>fering this course.<br />
As part <strong>of</strong> the selection process, you may be required to attend an interview.<br />

The Diploma <strong>of</strong> Community Services (Children's Services) - Out <strong>of</strong> School Hours<br />
Care is designed to provide the skills, knowledge, understanding and practical<br />
skills to work with children and their families in Outside School Hours Care<br />
(OSHC) programs. Graduates provide quality care for the social, emotional,<br />
physical, educational and recreational needs <strong>of</strong> school age children (5-12 years).<br />
The course is part <strong>of</strong> a suite <strong>of</strong> courses which provide a comprehensive package <strong>of</strong><br />
training to meet the needs <strong>of</strong> the children's services industry, and reflects the<br />
competency standards as outlined in the Community Services Training Packages.<br />
The course has national accreditation which will allows graduates the opportunity<br />
to apply for work throughout most States/Territories <strong>of</strong> Australia.<br />
Work in the Children's Services field is both demanding and extremely rewarding.<br />
Those seeking careers in Children's Services should enjoy being with children.<br />
Desirable qualities for this type <strong>of</strong> work include patience, understanding,<br />
tolerance, adaptability, imagination, cheerfulness, energy, caring attitudes and a<br />
willingness to take responsibility. Children's Services workers must also be<br />
physically fit as they are on their feet most <strong>of</strong> the time and actively involved in all<br />
