OUTDOOR RECREATION<br />
SR050299 Diploma <strong>of</strong> Outdoor Recreation<br />
Within the recreation sector, the role <strong>of</strong> outdoor recreation is expanding,<br />
particularly in outdoor education and adventure tourism. Our course is an exciting<br />
and fun filled experience. You can look forward to the development <strong>of</strong> your<br />
technical and interpersonal skills, your pr<strong>of</strong>essional judgement and prudent safety<br />
skills.<br />
We begin the course with the fundamentals, making sure everyone understands<br />
the basic before moving on to more complex challenges. The course is intensive<br />
as there is a lot to learn in a short time.<br />
The course is delivered in partnership with the Outdoor Education Group (OEG) and<br />
is based at Eildon in North East Victoria. It is designed as a full-time two year<br />
Diploma course with the option to exit after one year with the Certificate IV in<br />
Outdoor Recreation. An application for the second year is required, as places may<br />
be limited.<br />

Career opportunities<br />
Graduates <strong>of</strong>the diploma level will be able to undertake a significant role in the<br />
management <strong>of</strong> outdoor recreation enterprise or facilities, develop and conduct<br />
extended outdoor programs or activities in a variety <strong>of</strong> environmental conditions.<br />
Certificate IV graduates will be able to apply for a range <strong>of</strong> general education and<br />
work skills to obtain employment and successfully participate in the outdoor<br />
recreation industry, conduct activities at outdoor recreation centres, camps and in<br />
adventure guiding, work in the outdoor retail sector.<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essional recognition<br />
External accreditation standards aimed for:<br />
ACF (Australian Canoe Federation) Pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in Kayak.<br />
Basic Skills Instructor (ACF) in Canoe (C2).<br />
ASPI (Australian Snowsports Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Instructor).<br />
Wilderness First Aid qualified.<br />
Qualified River Rescue (Rescue 3) International Accreditation.<br />
Internal accreditation in line with industry standards:<br />
Assistant Climbing Instructor.<br />
Level 1 Rafting Guide.<br />
Level 1 Bushwalking Leader.<br />
Course duration<br />
Two years full-time.<br />
Entry requirements<br />
Applicants over 21 years <strong>of</strong> age are preferred. We are looking to train people who<br />
share:<br />
A love <strong>of</strong> the outdoors and natural environs.<br />
A desire to work with young people.<br />
A desire to develop skills in communication, facilitation and leadership.<br />
A desire to work in the outdoor industry.<br />
Applicants do not need academic qualifications to enter the course, but a<br />
background in outdoor recreation is highly recommended. The outcomes <strong>of</strong> the<br />
courses are compatible with industry standards required by employers.<br />
Application procedure<br />
Applications must be made through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre<br />
(VTAC).<br />
After applying to VTAC applicants must contact the Department <strong>of</strong> Health,<br />
Recreation and Human Services on 9213 6682 to receive further information with<br />
regard to a supplementary application form, interview and/or direct application.<br />
Full-time (Semester 2) applicants must contact the department.<br />
Selected applicants may be asked to attend an appraisal day, details will be<br />
provided separately.<br />
