Career opportunities<br />

Employment as theatre workers in a small company or as individuals with other<br />

artists on specific projects.<br />

Course duration<br />

Two years full-time.<br />

Structure<br />

Students will be expected to attend classes from 9.30 - 4.30pm Monday to Friday,<br />

commencing mid February through to November. During Performance Projects<br />

after-hours work will also be required.<br />

The course <strong>of</strong>fers four major Performance Projects where students can practically<br />

apply their skills. The event projects may include: theatre for young people,<br />

community theatre, scripted productions, puppetry, circus, comedy/cabaret.<br />

festivals, self-devised and directed productions.<br />

There is also flexibility to enable students to undertake further study in<br />

specialised areas such as directing, stage management, lighting and sound<br />

operations.<br />

Entry requirements<br />

Satisfactory completion <strong>of</strong> an appropriate Victorian Year 12 or its equivalent, or<br />

mature age. Applicants will be asked to participate in a day <strong>of</strong> workshop and<br />

written activities.<br />

Applications must be made through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre<br />

(VTAC).<br />

and Community Theatre) -<br />

Indigenous Performing Arts<br />

This course is for Indigenous Australians wishing to pursue a pr<strong>of</strong>essional career<br />

in the performing arts, and for those wishing to develop their confidence and self<br />

expression.<br />

Aims & Objectives<br />

The course aims to train participants not only in a range <strong>of</strong> performance skills but<br />

also to acquire the broad range <strong>of</strong> skills necessary to mount and manage a project<br />

or an event. For the first twelve months the students work together through a<br />

number <strong>of</strong> modules <strong>of</strong> subjects which have been generally customised to cover<br />

many aspects <strong>of</strong> performing arts from an Indigenous point <strong>of</strong> view.<br />

The course aims to facilitate the provision <strong>of</strong> Indigenous guest speakers with a<br />

wide range <strong>of</strong> industry experience. It also <strong>of</strong>fers students the opportunity to<br />

attend a wide range <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional theatre. Support tutors are available should<br />

students require additional support with any module.<br />

Our Course Advisory Board includes members from the Aboriginal Community and<br />

Indigenous Australian pr<strong>of</strong>essionals from Industry.<br />

Structure<br />

The focus <strong>of</strong> the first year is to complete two event or performance projects<br />

relating to exploration and expression <strong>of</strong> Aboriginality. These projects are<br />

conceived, developed, rehearsed and staged for the mediums <strong>of</strong> video and<br />

theatre.<br />

In the second year students focus on simulating industry practice by creating,<br />

devising and evaluating two further event or performance projects and then to<br />

participate in a small companies simulation.<br />
