The course combines both classroom teaching and practical placement. Students<br />
gain 'hands-on' experience working with children in before school care, after<br />
school care and vacation care services. Great importance is attached to the<br />
student's performance in practical placements which constitutes a significant<br />
component <strong>of</strong> the course.<br />
Aims & Objectives<br />
This course is available to those currently working in out <strong>of</strong> school hours care and<br />
those who wish to enter the field. This course enables people who are currently<br />
working in the OSHC industry to have their knowledge, skills and experience<br />
recognised. It also provides flexible learning options to further develop<br />
understanding <strong>of</strong> OSHC programs and improve career pathways.<br />

Career opportunities<br />
On successful completion <strong>of</strong> this course graduates will be qualified to work as<br />
coordinators in Out <strong>of</strong> School Hours programs. Opportunities include work as<br />
qualified pr<strong>of</strong>essional in before school care, after school care, and vacation care.<br />
There are career pathways into service coordination and with further study into<br />
reaching policy and management roles.<br />
Course duration<br />
Oelivered over eighteen months to two years through a mix <strong>of</strong> campus based and<br />
workplace teaching and assessment model.<br />
Structure<br />
It is expected that students will be required to attend classes for approximately 36<br />
weeks <strong>of</strong> the year on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays between 1O.00am and 1.30pm.<br />
Students will also be required to attend Saturday classes two to three times per<br />
term. The course also includes a significant amount <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>f-campus time doing<br />
assignments, participating in study groups, preparing for workplace assessment<br />
and self study.<br />
All students will be expected to undertake Workplace Assessment to demonstrate<br />
the competency standards reflected in the Competency Training Packages for the<br />
industry.<br />
If students are working in OSHC all efforts will be made to enable them to<br />
undertake a significant proportion <strong>of</strong> their fieldwork in their place <strong>of</strong> work.<br />
However there will be an expectation that they may be required to undertake a<br />
proportion <strong>of</strong> the fieldwork hours outside <strong>of</strong> their place <strong>of</strong> employment.<br />

Entry requirements<br />
Satisfactory completion <strong>of</strong> an appropriate Victorian Year 12 or its equivalent, or<br />
mature age. Applicants must also be working in the OSHC industry and meet the<br />
following criteria:<br />
1. Demonstrated interest in and suitability for work in children's services field.<br />
2. Entry competencies which reflect the starting point for course delivery.<br />
3. Physical and psychological health necessary to meet course requirements<br />
including practicum.<br />
4. Demonstrated maturity including ability to be responsible for the care <strong>of</strong><br />
children.<br />
Course entry requirements recognise the need for flexibility with respect to entry.<br />
Four major categories for entry have been established: School Leavers, Alternative<br />
Category (ACE) Entry, Mature Age Students and Persons <strong>of</strong> Non-English Speaking<br />
Background who are also working in the OSHC Industry.<br />
