20083VIC Certificate III in Carpentry and<br />

Joinery (JoineryIShopfitting/<br />

Stairbuilding)<br />

Apprentices in joinery are involved in the planning and construction <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>f-site<br />

components used in the building industry. These components include doors,<br />

windows, cupboards and stairs. Students need a knowledge <strong>of</strong> how different<br />

aspects <strong>of</strong> these components are constructed: through this subject they will also<br />

gain an understanding <strong>of</strong> other trades related to this area.<br />

While working primarily with timber as a basic material, the student learns to<br />

appreciate all materials used in the building trade. Skill development covers<br />

preparation <strong>of</strong> plans, cutting schedules and set-out requirements for all aspects <strong>of</strong><br />

the trade. Instruction is given in all phases <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>f-site component manufacture<br />

including quantities, plan drawing/interpretation, set-out procedures and OH&S.<br />

Approximately 960 hours <strong>of</strong> block release training over three years.<br />

Structure<br />

Joinery apprentices carry out their study while employed in the industry. They<br />

attend school under a block release system <strong>of</strong> one week blocks.<br />

BCG20198 Certificate II in General<br />

Construction (Front End Training) -<br />

Pre-Apprenticeship Painting &<br />

Decorating<br />

This course is suitable for people interested in gaining an apprenticeship or<br />

traineeship in the building industry. Students undertaking this course will<br />

complete broad based training in painting and decorating. Students who are not<br />

sponsored by an employer may enter this course, however, preference will be<br />

given to sponsored students.<br />
