NURSING<br />

2407 ADC Certificate IV in Health (Nursing)<br />

The Certificate IV in Health (Nursing) replaces the training previously referred to<br />

as State Enrolled Nursing. Following successful completion <strong>of</strong> the course,<br />

graduates are eligible to register with the Nurses Board <strong>of</strong> Victoria in Division 2 <strong>of</strong><br />

the Nursing Register. Those seeking careers as Division 2 Nurses should enjoy<br />

working with people, particularly the elderly. Division 2 Nurses work under the<br />

direct or indirect supervision <strong>of</strong> Registered Nurses Division 1 and 3 in providing<br />

client care. The Division 2 nurse assists clients/residents with a range <strong>of</strong> practical<br />

health care needs. The work <strong>of</strong> the second level nurse is physically demanding,<br />

<strong>of</strong>ten involving assisting clients/residents with mobility and comfort needs. The<br />

work is both emotionally challenging and rewarding. The Division 2 Nurse<br />

establishes and maintains social interaction and provides for the physical and<br />

emotional needs <strong>of</strong> culturally diverse clients experiencing a range <strong>of</strong> altered<br />

mental and physical states. Desirable qualities for this work are maturity,<br />

commitment, tolerance, respect for others, patience and adaptability.<br />

Career opportunities<br />

Employment as Division 2 Nurses in nursing homes, hospitals, hostels, mental<br />

health, acute care and community settings. Successful completion <strong>of</strong> the<br />

certificate may also allow entry into a nursing degree with 'credit' and/or<br />

'advanced standing'.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essional recognition<br />

Membership with the Nurses Board <strong>of</strong> Victoria in Division 2 <strong>of</strong> the nursing register<br />

to be able to practice as Division 2 Nurses.<br />

Course duration<br />

One year fUll-time, two years part-time, or in traineeship mode.<br />

Structure<br />

Delivery modes may vary across campuses. Full-time students normally attend<br />

classes or undertake clinical placements for up to thirty hours per week. Classes<br />

are scheduled between 8.30am and 5.30pm. Clinical placement attendance<br />

follows the shifts set by hospitals with the majority <strong>of</strong> placement shifts being<br />

from 7.00am to 3.30pm, but some shift attendance is required between 1.00pm<br />

and 9.30pm. Clinical placement will be undertaken at a range <strong>of</strong> hospitals and<br />

nursing homes including: Monash Medical Centre, Caulfield General Medical<br />

Centre, Royal Melbourne Hospital, Austin and Repatriation Medical Centre,<br />

Montcalm Aged Care Facility, Albert Road Clinic, Peter James Centre and various<br />

community agencies.<br />
