The Diploma <strong>of</strong> Library and Information Studies incorporates the Certificate III in<br />

Library and Information Studies. The Certificate III concentrates on introducing<br />

and developing skills to work in a variety <strong>of</strong> assistant roles whilst developing<br />

sound knowledge <strong>of</strong> the library/information systems. The Diploma level develops<br />

broader and specialist knowledge and skills required to manage practices within<br />

the library/information sector.<br />

Library technicians and library <strong>of</strong>ficers in a wide range <strong>of</strong> library types and other<br />

information agencies.<br />

Graduates may also be granted 'advanced standing' into degree courses in the<br />

library and information sciences in some institutions.<br />

Course duration<br />

Two years full-time or equivalent part-time.<br />

Structure<br />

The first semester <strong>of</strong> the Diploma is made up <strong>of</strong> the Certificate III modules.<br />

Students may finish their studies at this point and receive a Certificate III or they<br />

may go on to a further three semesters <strong>of</strong> study at the Diploma level. Students<br />

may also undertake the course part-time. Both day and evening weekly classes<br />

are available. Some modules are <strong>of</strong>fered in block mode i.e. over a number <strong>of</strong> full<br />

days. Some modules are also available by 'flexible delivery' involving little or no<br />

class attendance.<br />

Workplace Assessment<br />

From 2001 people who are employed in libraries and other information agencies<br />

and who believe that they already possess any <strong>of</strong> the competencies listed in the<br />

Library and Information Services training package may apply to be assessed in the<br />

Entry requirements<br />

Satisfactory completion <strong>of</strong> an appropriate Victorian Year 12 or its equivalent. or<br />

mature age is required for the Diploma.<br />

No formal entry requirements apply to the Certificate III. Applicants should<br />

possess basic communication and keyboard skills, along with word processing<br />

and spreadsheet fundamentals. Bridging courses are available in these areas if<br />

needed.<br />

Application procedure<br />

Full-time (Semester 1) Diploma applications must be made through the Victorian<br />

Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC).<br />

Applicants who wish to enrol in the Certificate III, study part-time or commence<br />

The Advanced Diploma <strong>of</strong> Management is a nested program and incorporates the<br />

Diploma <strong>of</strong> Management, Certificate IV in Management, and Certificate III in<br />

Management. The Certificate III is the first stage in the Diploma <strong>of</strong> Management<br />

and concentrates on introducing basic management concepts. The Advanced<br />

Diploma concentrates on introducing further management modules to build on the<br />

knowledge gained from completing the nested program.<br />
