This course prepares students for careers in either graphic design or product<br />

design by providing a foundation program in design theory and practice. The<br />

streams emphasise preparatory training in graphic and product design, enabling<br />

students to apply for further vocation design studies in <strong>TAFE</strong> or Higher Education.<br />

Aims & Objectives<br />

This course aims to provide an overview <strong>of</strong> the historical and contextual basis for<br />

design as well as providing an introduction to the practical skills and aesthetic<br />

engagement required for a designer.<br />

Note: the Product stream is only available at the Wantirna campus.<br />

Career opportunities<br />

Graduates are encouraged to apply to graphic or industrial design courses at the<br />

higher education level.<br />

Course duration<br />

One year full-time.<br />

Structure<br />

In Semester 1 all students (Graphic & Product) undertake common core SUbjects.<br />

In Semester 2, students complete specialist subjects in either the graphic or<br />

product design stream.<br />

At Prahran campus (only) additional accredited subjects are delivered as an<br />

'Enhancement' to the Graphic Design stream. All students who complete the<br />

Graphic Design stream plus the Enhancement Program, at the appropriate mark<br />

level, are afforded direct entry into Year 2 <strong>of</strong> the Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Design (Graphic<br />

Design) at the <strong>Swinburne</strong> National School <strong>of</strong> Design.<br />

Entry requirements<br />

Satisfactory completion <strong>of</strong> an appropriate Victorian Year 12 or its equivalent, or<br />

mature age. It is also expected that applicants will have competencies in art and<br />

design, numeracy and literacy that will enable them to achieve the course<br />

objectives.<br />

Applicants for the program at Prahran campus will be expected to have more<br />

advanced competencies to secure admission into the course.<br />

Application procedure<br />

Applications must be made through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre<br />

(VTAC).<br />

After applying to VTAC applicants must contact the Department <strong>of</strong> Arts to receive<br />

further information with regard to a supplementary application form.<br />

Applicants will be asked to supply evidence through the presentation <strong>of</strong> a folio <strong>of</strong><br />

art work <strong>of</strong> their artistic ability. The criteria used for assessing the art work are:<br />

manipulative and technical art skills, accuracy, sense <strong>of</strong> design, proportion and<br />

colour, neatness, acuteness <strong>of</strong> observation.<br />

This course prepares students to create and execute design concepts efficiently<br />

and economically and to be capable <strong>of</strong> using traditional media and computer<br />

technology to assemble 'camera ready' and digital artwork with the necessary<br />

understanding <strong>of</strong> graphic reproduction techniques.<br />

The course aims to provide participants with the skills, knowledge and attitudes<br />

required to qualify to work as graphic artists across a wide range <strong>of</strong> graphic<br />

design industry occupations.<br />

Career opportunities exist within advertising agencies and the graphic design and<br />

finished art studios which service them. Employment can also be found in a<br />

number <strong>of</strong> other areas <strong>of</strong> the industry, such as publishing (newspaper and<br />

magazines), retail advertising, large corporations, printers, film and television<br />

production houses, educational institutions and government departments.<br />
