Antahkarana. The Internal Organ of the Mind, including the deliberative<br />

faculty, the determinative faculty, and the Self-Conscious Principle.<br />

Anubhava. Realization.<br />

Anumana. Inference.<br />

Apana. The nerve-currents governing the excretory organs; one of the five<br />

manifestations of Prana.<br />

Aparapratyaksha. Psychic sensing, beyond the realm of sensuousness.<br />

Aparavidya. Knowledge of externals, as contrasted with knowledge of<br />

internals; superficial knowledge.<br />

Apas. The element of Water.<br />

Apta. One who has attained Illumination.<br />

Apura. Merit.<br />

Arjavam. Directness in intention; straightforwardness.<br />

Arupa. Formless.<br />

Asamprajnata. The extreme and highest state of superconsciousness.<br />

Asana. Posture; bodily attitude assumed during meditation; the Third Step<br />

in Patanjali’s Yoga System.<br />

Asat. Non-being; non-existence.<br />

Asvada. Psychic taste; or faculty of taste.<br />

Asti. To exist; to Be.<br />

Atikranta-Chavaniya. Meditation leading up to and culminating in the<br />

state of Samadhi, or Transcendental Consciousness, or Ecstasy.<br />

Atman. The Spirit; the Real Self.<br />

Aum (or Om). A symbolic “Holy Word” signifying The Absolute Idea.<br />

Avarana. The outward sheaths of the mind.<br />

Avatara or Avatar. A divine incarnation; an incarnation of Deity in human<br />

form.<br />

Avidya. Ignorance.<br />

Avyaktam. Undifferentiated state or condition of Prakriti, or Nature, before<br />

there is a manifestation.<br />

Bhagavad-Gita. A sacred book of India, or Upanishad.
