Part XIII: The Knower and the Known.<br />

hen spake Arjuna unto Krishna, the Blessed Lord, saying:<br />

“Pray inform me, Blessed Lord, concerning that which we call the<br />

Personal Self, and that great Something beyond and above this, which we<br />

call the ‘I,’ or ‘Ego,’ or perchance, the ‘Soul,’ which knows. Tell me of this<br />

Knower and also of the Known, or which is seemingly Known.”<br />

Krishna: “That which thou calleth thy Personal Self, Arjuna, is called by<br />

philosophers, ‘The Known.’ That which thou calleth the ‘I,’ the ‘Ego,’ or the<br />

‘Soul,’ is called by the philosophers ‘the Knower.’ And remember this, O<br />

Prince, that I am the Knower of the Known in whatever form it may appear<br />

and manifest. This understanding of the Knower and the Known is esteemed<br />

by Me as Wisdom worthy of attainment.<br />

“Now, listen to My words, while I inform thee of the nature of the Known;<br />

what it resembleth; what are its various parts; from what it proceedeth; and<br />

also what is That which Knoweth the Known, and what are Its characteristics.<br />

Briefly will I state it—that which has been sung by the Sages in various chants;<br />

and which appeareth in manifold verses of the sacred writings, with many<br />

reasonings, arguments and proofs.<br />

“The Personal Self is made up of the five Mahabuta, or Principles, known<br />

as follows, by the teachers: Ahankara, or the Consciousness of Personality;
