“In my essence I am free from the effects of action; and I have not any<br />

desire for rewards or the fruits of actions; for these things are produced by<br />

My power and have no hold upon Me. Verily I say that he who is able to see<br />

and perceive Me as I am, in mine own essence—he is freed from the effects<br />

of action. Understanding this, the Wise Men of old still performed actions,<br />

but were not attached to the fruits thereof, and so moved on to Deliverance.<br />

Follow thou their example and reap their reward.<br />

“But even the wise, at times, have been confused as to what was Action<br />

and what Inaction. Therefore, I will inform thee regarding this. I shalt tell<br />

thee of what action consisteth, knowing which thou shalt be relieved from<br />

evil and set free.<br />

“He who would learn the truth concerning action must grasp these three<br />

things—Action, Inaction, and Wrong Action. Difficult to clearly discern is the<br />

path of Action.<br />

“He who hath so far attained that he is able to see Action in Inaction and<br />

Inaction in Action is among the wise of his race, and to him cometh harmony<br />

and peace even while he performeth actions. His works are free from the<br />

bonds of desire, and his activities are purged of their dross by the Flame of<br />

Wisdom.<br />

“Having freed himself from attachment to the fruits of actions, and not<br />

being dependent thereon, he is enjoying Inaction even while in the very<br />

exercise of Action. Freed from all and dependent upon naught, his mind and<br />

senses under control, he goeth through the motion of action and seemeth<br />

even to perform it in the most approved and successful manner; but full<br />

well he knoweth that his Real Self is not entangled in the action, and is far<br />

above reward or punishment, for victory or defeat. He is released from the<br />

consequences of Action, which are bonds and chains holding down those<br />

who know not the truth.<br />

“Being content with what the day bringeth forth; and being freed from like<br />

and dislike; being without envy; being willing to accept success or failure<br />

with a cheerful heart, after having done his best, he is not bound. For him
