The Spirit of the Upanishads1574<br />

Egoism is plainly not destroyed, till all forms and conventions which hold<br />

thee fast in bondage, as in a cage, are annihilated to the extent of leaving<br />

absolutely nothing for remainder.<br />

Yogavasishtha.<br />

Being, wisdom, bliss, name, and form, these five make up all objects whatever;<br />

the first three make up Spirit, the rest the material world.<br />

Drgdrsyaviveka.<br />

Some may cognize the ever blissful, the illuminator of all illumination<br />

whatever, even by cognizing It without even these attributes.<br />

Atmapurana.<br />

Said Yajnavalkya:—Oh love! the husband is dear not for himself, but for<br />

Self; the wife is dear not for herself, but for Self………No one thing is<br />

dear for itself, but for Self. This Self should be seen, studied, contemplated,<br />

assimilated; oh sweet Maitreyi! the study contemplation, and assimilation of<br />

Self leaves nothing to know.<br />

Brhadaranyakopanishad.<br />

Said Yajnavalkya: It may be seen after the following illustrations: The ocean<br />

is the one resort of all water; the skin is the ultimate sphere of all touch; the<br />

tongue is the one ground of all taste; the nose is the one basis of all smell;<br />

the eye is the one field of all form; the ear is the one place of all sound;<br />

the mind is the one source of all ideas; the heart is the one fountain of all<br />

knowledge; the Word is the one truth of all the Vedas:—even thus is It the<br />

one fact of all and every being. Put a lump of salt in water, it melts into the<br />

water of which it came; you can never grasp it afterwards; it is all salt, every<br />

drop of water you may touch. So indeed, oh dear one! is this great, endless
