• a prohibition against directing mines, booby-traps, and other devices against the civilianpopulation;• a prohibition against the indiscriminate use of mines, booby-traps, and other devices;• an obligation to take feasible precautions to protect civilians from the effects of mines,booby-traps, and other devices;• an obligation to give effective advance warning of the emplacement of mines, boobytraps,and other devices, unless circumstances do not permit; and• obligations with respect to the recording of the placement of mines, booby-traps, andother devices.6.12.5.1 Prohibition Against Directing Mines, Booby-Traps, and Other DevicesAgainst Civilians. As with other weapons, mines, booby-traps, and other devices may not bedirected against the civilian population, individual civilians, or civilian objects. 2856.12.5.2 Prohibition Against Indiscriminate Use of Mines, Booby-Traps, or OtherDevices. Indiscriminate use of mines, booby-traps, or other devices is prohibited. 286This prohibition on indiscriminate use of mines, booby-traps, or other devices prohibitsany placement of mines, booby-traps, or other devices that is not on, or directed against, amilitary objective. 287 On the other hand, it would be permissible to direct mines against enemyforces that are expected to pass through an area.
