Hospital ships that, in accordance with Article 31 of the GWS-Sea, are provisionallydetained by the enemy, must haul down the flag of the party to the conflict in whose service theyare or whose direction they have accepted. 326Coastal lifeboats, if they continue to operate with the consent of the Occupying Powerfrom a base that is occupied, may be allowed, when away from their base, to continue to fly theirown national colors along with a flag carrying a red cross on a white ground, subject to priornotification to all the parties to the conflict concerned. 3277.12.3.2 Lifeboats and All Small Craft Used by the Medical Service. Lifeboats ofhospital ships, coastal lifeboats, and all small craft used by the Medical Service shall be paintedwhite with dark red crosses prominently displayed and shall, in general, comply with theidentification system prescribed above for hospital ships. 3287.12.3.3 Night-Time Identification Measures. The above-mentioned ships andcraft, which may wish to ensure by night and in times of reduced visibility the protection towhich they are entitled, must, subject to the assent of the party to the conflict under whose powerthey are, take the necessary measures to render their painting and distinctive emblemssufficiently apparent. 3297.12.3.4 Other Emblems Instead of the Red Cross.
