9.14 MEDICAL ATTENTION FOR INTERNED POWSIn addition to the rules relating to the general rules applicable to the medical care of thewounded and sick, 264 the following rules also apply to the medical care of POWs who have beeninterned in POW camps.The GPW and the GWS contemplate that POWs will benefit from the services of retainedmedical personnel or POWs who are trained as medical personnel but not attached to the medicalservice. 265 However, the provision in the GPW and the GWS for such personnel does not relievethe Detaining Power of its obligations to provide for the medical care of POWs. 2669.14.1 Access to Medical Attention.9.14.1.1 Camp Infirmary. Every camp shall have an adequate infirmary wherePOWs may have the attention they require, as well as an appropriate diet. 267 Isolation wardsshall, if necessary, be set aside for cases of contagious or mental disease. 2689.14.1.2 Right of POWs to Present Themselves for Examination. POWs may notbe prevented from presenting themselves to the medical authorities for examination. 269The GPW contemplates that POWs would have daily sick call in which they couldpresent themselves for medical examination, even when undergoing disciplinary punishment. 270The right of POWs to present themselves for examination does not mean that POWs mustnecessarily be examined every day by a doctor, nor does it preclude disciplinary punishment ifPOWs abusively make groundless requests for medical examination. 2719.14.1.3 Monthly Medical Inspections.
