It is appropriate for femaleprotected persons to be searched by female personnel, if possible. This practice helps reduce therisk of accusations of indecent behavior.A woman internee shall not be searched except by a woman. 9510.6.1.3 Securing Protected Persons With Handcuffs and Other Security Devices.When necessary for security reasons, protected persons may be secured temporarily withhandcuffs, flex cuffs, blindfolds, or other security devices. 9610.6.1.4 Search of the Property of Protected Persons. When necessary as a resultof the war, items in the possession of protected persons may be removed and searched, butproperty should be returned as soon as possible, absent a legal basis for the seizure of theproperty. 9710.6.2 Interrogation of Protected Persons. The law of war does not prohibit interrogationof protected persons, but specifies conditions and limitations for conducting interrogation.10.6.2.1 Humane Treatment During Interrogation. Interrogation must be carriedout in a manner consistent with the requirements for humane treatment, including the prohibitionagainst acts of violence or intimidation, and insults. 98No physical or moral coercion shall be exercised against protected persons to obtaininformation from them or from third parties. 9910.6.2.2 Additional U.S. Law and Policy on Interrogation.
