9.19.2.3 Labor Assignments That May Be Compelled. POWs, like other enemynationals, may not be compelled to take part in operations of war directed against their owncountry. 385 POWs may be compelled to do only such work as is included in the followingclasses:• POW camp administration, installation, and maintenance;• agriculture;• industries connected with the production or the extraction of raw materials, andmanufacturing industries, with the exception of metallurgical, machinery, and chemicalindustries;• public works and building operations having no military character or purpose;• transport and handling of stores not of a military character or purpose;• commercial businesses, including arts and crafts;• domestic services; and• public utilities having no military character or purpose. 386Should the above provisions be infringed, POWs shall be allowed to exercise their rightof complaint, in conformity with Article 78 of the GPW. 3879.19.3 Suitable Work Conditions.
