10.20.3.1 Prohibition Against Tattooing or Imprinting Signs or Markings on theBody. Identification by tattooing or imprinting signs or markings on the body is prohibited. 32010.20.3.2 Prohibition Against Prolonged Standing, Roll-Calls, Punishment Drill,Military Drill and Manuevers, or the Reduction of Food Rations. In particular, prolongedstanding and roll-calls, punishment drill, military drill and maneuvers, or the reduction of foodrations are prohibited. 32110.20.4 Use of Force to Maintain Order and to Prevent Escape. As with POWs, the useof weapons against protected persons, especially against those who are escaping or attempting toescape, shall constitute an extreme measure, which shall always be preceded by warningsappropriate to the circumstances. 322 For example, internees should not be fired upon if they areapprehended within the camp limits while making preparations to escape, and there is no risk ofescape or harm to anyone.It should be noted that, although the GC has no provision corresponding to Article 42 ofthe GPW, the above principle is equally valid in the internee context.10.20.4.1 Use of Non-Lethal Weapons (Including Riot Control Agents). Nonlethalweapons may be employed to control rioting protected persons or to prevent their escape.In particular, the use of riot control agents to control rioting protected persons is notprohibited. 323If the use of deadly force is warranted and authorized against protected persons, there isno legal requirement to employ non-lethal weapons before resort to deadly force. 32410.21 INTERNEE PETITIONS, COMPLAINTS, AND REPORTS ABOUT CONDITIONS OF INTERNMENT10.21.1 Internee Right to Present Petitions and Complaints.
