9.4 NATIONAL-LEVEL GPW IMPLEMENTATION MEASURESThe GPW requires a number of measures at the national level to facilitate protection forPOWs.9.4.1 Appointment or Establishment of Entities. The GPW provides for certain bodies orentities to be appointed or established.9.4.1.1 Appointment of a Protecting Power. The GPW contemplates that aProtecting Power will have been appointed to assist in the implementation of the GPW. 78 AProtecting Power has a variety of roles under the GPW related to the protection of POWs. 799.4.1.2 Establishment of a National POW Information Bureau. A National POWInformation Bureau shall be established by each of the Powers concerned. 809.4.1.3 Establishment of a Central POW Information Agency. A Central POWInformation Agency shall be established in a neutral country by the Power concerned jointly. 819.4.1.4 Appointment of Mixed Medical Commissions. Mixed MedicalCommissions shall be appointed to examine sick and wounded POWs and to make allappropriate decisions regarding them. 829.4.1.5 Graves Registration Service. A Graves Registration Service shall beestablished by each of the Powers concerned. 839.4.2 Notification of Certain Laws or Policies Between Belligerents. Parties to a conflictmust notify opposing belligerents or the Protecting Power of certain matters relating to POWs.9.4.2.1 Notification of Parole Policy.
