• members of the armed forces who are ministers of religion without having officiated aschaplains to their own forces; 201 and• military medical and religious personnel who forfeit their status as retained personnelbecause they are not exclusively engaged in medical and religious duties. 2027.9.2 Use of Identification Card to Help Establish Retained Personnel Status. The 1949Geneva Conventions contemplate that identification cards will be used to help establish theproper status of persons, including the entitlement to retained personnel status. 203Persons entitled to retained personnel status, in addition to wearing the identity discmentioned in Article 16 of the GWS or Article 19 of the GWS-Sea, shall also carry a specialidentity card bearing the distinctive emblem. 204This card shall be water-resistant and of such size that it can be carried in the pocket. Itshall be worded in the national language; shall mention at least the surname and first names, thedate of birth, the rank, and the service number of the bearer; and shall state in what capacity thebearer is entitled to the protection of the GWS or GWS-Sea. The card shall bear the photographof the owner and also either the bearer’s signature or fingerprints or both. It shall be embossedwith the stamp of the military authority. 205The identity card shall be uniform throughout the same armed forces and, as far aspossible, of a similar type in the armed forces of the Parties to the GWS and GWS-Sea. Theparties to the conflict may be guided by the model, which is annexed, by way of example, to theGWS and GWS-Sea. Parties to the conflict shall inform each other, at the outbreak of hostilities,of the model they are using.
