12.12.5.3 Signals. The belligerents may agree to use certain signals to helpimplement the armistice. For example, signals may be agreed upon to indicate the passage ofparlementaires, the start or end of the armistice, or for other reasons.12.12.5.4 Maps Showing Boundaries or the Location of Forces. An armisticeagreement may also include an exchange of maps or other imagery showing the lines ofopposing forces (or the location of forces) at the time of the start of the armistice. 204 Such mapsmay facilitate understanding of applicable boundaries, such as the location of neutral zones, aswell as reduce the risk of unintended confrontation.12.13 ARMISTICES – VIOLATIONS AND DENUNCIATIONAn armistice, like other formal arrangements between belligerents, engages the honor ofall parties for the exact and complete fulfillment of every obligation thereby imposed. 205 Seriousviolations of the armistice by one of the parties gives an opposing party the right of denouncingthe armistice, and deliberate violations of the armistice by individuals are punishable.12.13.1 Serious Violations as a Basis for Denouncing an Armistice. Any seriousviolation of the armistice by one of the parties gives an opposing belligerent the right ofdenouncing the armistice, and even, in cases of urgency, of recommencing hostilitiesimmediately. 206 12.13.1.1 Examples of Serious Violations of an Armistice.
