In fact the general languagesynonyms such as to present cannot always replace or be replaced by to adduce because thenature of their actants is different (The <strong>de</strong>fendant presented the <strong>de</strong>fense of misi<strong>de</strong>ntificationbut * The <strong>de</strong>fendant adduced the <strong>de</strong>fense of misi<strong>de</strong>ntification). For all these reasons, we<strong>de</strong>ci<strong>de</strong>d to retain this verb because we consi<strong>de</strong>red that its use is specialized.5.1.3. DiscussionIn this sub-chapter we presented the results concerning the selection and validation of thePortuguese and English terms. We explained that some candidate terms in the twolanguages were eliminated either because they correspon<strong>de</strong>d to part of speech ambiguitiesor because they did not meet the validation criteria. The selection and validation of termsturned out to be one of the most challenging tasks carried out in this research for two mainreasons.Firstly, the i<strong>de</strong>ntification of terms is a problematic task in itself because there is noclear-cut and controversy-free <strong>de</strong>finition of what is a term. In this research, we consi<strong>de</strong>red aterm as a kind of lexical unit whose meaning is related to a given subject field, but wefound that what does and does not relate to a subject field was not always self-evi<strong>de</strong>nt. Infact, many if not most of the verbs that we selected correspond to seemingly general
