279This frame groups together one English term and two Portuguese terms, but each ofthem profiles the core FEs in a different way. The term apply 2 profiles the three core FEsacross contexts, i.e. in some of its contexts the verb profiles the FE LAW together with theFE CASE, whereas in some others it profiles the FE LAW together with the FEPROTAGONIST. In contrast, the Portuguese equivalent aplicar 2 profiles the core FEs LAWtogether with the FE CASE, and the other Portuguese equivalent vincular 1 profiles the coreFEs LAW and PROTAGONIST. As a result, the terms are not interchangeable in all contexts.In order to correctly translate apply 2 into Portuguese one has to analyze the natureof its actants. If the verb‘s actants denote concepts related to that of CASE, apply 2 should betranslated as aplicar 2 . If its cooccurrents denotes concepts related to that of PROTAGONIST,apply 2 should be translated as vincular 1 . In contrast, both aplicar 2 and vincular 1 can alwaysbe translated as apply 2 because the latter can be used in the same contexts of the former.The following pairs of verb are partial equivalents for similar reasons: apply 2 andaplicar 2 , apply 2 and vincular 1 , apply 3 and deduzir 1 , comply 2 and cumprir 1 , consider 2 anddeclarar 2 , dismiss 1 and revogar 1 , quash 1 and negar 1 .5.3.1.2.2. Semantic preferenceAbout 8% of the total number of equivalent pairs (i.e. 15 out of the 165 pairs ofequivalents) and about 27% of the total number of partial equivalents were given the partialequivalence status because the comparison of the descriptions revealed that one of the verbsin the equivalent pair more strongly combines with a given set of linguistic realizations thanthe verb in the other language.
