XLIXAdaptation:VALIDATION OF THE DESCRIPTIONOF LEGAL TERMSIn the Centro <strong>de</strong> Linguística da Universida<strong>de</strong> Nova <strong>de</strong> Lisboa (CLUNL) and in the Observatoire <strong>de</strong>linguistique Sens-Texte at the University of Montreal (OLST) we are currently <strong>de</strong>veloping aresearch project on the compilation of specialized dictionaries for tanslators and technical writers.The research is financed by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia do Ministério da Ciência,Tecnologia e Ensino Superior (FCT-MCTES) as part of a scholarship for a PhD in translation andterminology.The questions that we would like to ask you will help us validate a series of informationsconcerning terms such as to acquit, to infringe and to violate so as to ensure that the linguistic<strong>de</strong>scriptions that we propose are valid and rigourous. The terms that will be presented in thefollowing pages were extracted from the judgments of the Supreme Court of Canada producedbetween 2007 and 2009. The data is organized as in the example below:Term: acquit 1Context:Actantial structure:Examples:VerdictJUDGE acquits DEFENDANT of CHARGES1. The judge acquitted him of mur<strong>de</strong>r but convicted him of manslaughter.2. The appellant was acquitted of the charge of conspiracy to laun<strong>de</strong>r funds.3. A person who is acquitted of an indictable offence other than by reason of averdict of not criminally responsible on account of mental disor<strong>de</strong>r and whoseacquittal is set asi<strong>de</strong> by the court of appeal may appeal to the Supreme Court ofCanada.Each meaning of the verb contains four fields: ―Term‖, ―Context‖, ―Actancial structure‖and ―Examples‖. The questions that we would like to ask you are related to the information found inthose fields.Thank you for your collaboration.
