4un<strong>de</strong>rstand the phenomenon of terminological equivalence and to contribute to theelaboration of multilingual terminological resources, in general, and to the elaboration ofmultilingual resources covering the subject field of law, in particular. Finally, the findingsof the research should be useful for the teaching of specialized translation and terminology,for translators, terminologists and technical writers as well as for anyone interested in themultilingual aspects of terminology.1.3. Structure of the thesisIn this first chapter we have outlined the challenges that the creation of multilingualspecialized resources covering the subject field of law raise and i<strong>de</strong>ntified the need toelaborate a methodology to assign the equivalents of specialized verbs that occur in legaltexts. The various aspects of the thesis are <strong>de</strong>veloped in the following five chapters.Chapter 2, ―The state of the art‖, reviews the literature on the topics of legallanguage, equivalence and specialized verbs. It starts by <strong>de</strong>scribing the main characteristicsof legal language, in general, and of judgments as a legal genre, in particular. Here, thehypothesis is formulated that knowledge about judgments as a legal genre may be helpfulfor: the <strong>de</strong>sign of specialized corpora, the selection of candidate terms, the interpretation ofterminological data, and the assignment of equivalents. Then, the chapter compares how thephenomenon of equivalence has been approached from the viewpoint of lexicography andfrom the viewpoint of terminology, namely by providing <strong>de</strong>finitions and typologies ofequivalence along with illustrative examples. The hypothesis is formulated that the featureaccording to which the relationship of equivalence should be established needs to beequated as an external entity or frames and that the extralinguistic (participants in theframes) as well as the linguistic (syntagmatic context of the terms) <strong>de</strong>scription of the termsshould provi<strong>de</strong> enough information to un<strong>de</strong>rstand why a given term in one language is anequivalent of a term in another language. Finally, the chapter reviews the various
