presumably find them useful to perform a variety<br />

of missions in a wide range of circumstances <strong>and</strong> loc<strong>at</strong>ions<br />

(e.g., both a Taiwan context <strong>and</strong> deployments<br />

farther afield). But to fully pursue robust long-range<br />

capabilities, new pl<strong>at</strong>forms <strong>and</strong> force structures would<br />

be needed. With respect to force structure, indic<strong>at</strong>ors<br />

of a more ambitious Chinese naval presence, particularly<br />

in the area of SLOC protection, would likely include<br />

the following, as Table 5 indic<strong>at</strong>es.<br />

M<strong>at</strong>ur<strong>at</strong>ion of advanced levels of <strong>PLA</strong> doctrine, training, <strong>and</strong> human<br />
