from Columbia University.
HAROLD TANNER is an associate professor at
the University of North Texas, where he teaches undergraduate
and graduate courses on ancient, medieval,
and modern Chinese history and U.S.-China
diplomatic history. His publications and research
include China: A History (Hackett Publishers, 2009),
Strike Hard: Anti-crime Campaigns and Chinese Criminal
Justice, 1979-1984 (Cornell East Asia Series, 1999), and
several articles on Chinese criminal justice, as well as
articles and conference papers on Chinese Communist
strategy and operations in the war against the Nationalist
armies in Manchuria between 1945 and 1948. Dr.
Tanner holds an M.A. in area studies from the School
of Oriental and African Studies, University of London,
and a Ph.D. in Chinese history from Columbia
University.
YOU JI is reader/associate professor in School of
Social Science, the University of New South. He has
published widely on China’s political, military, and
foreign affairs. He is author of three books, including
The Armed Forces of China, 1999. He wrote numerous
articles, including “Politics as the Foundation for
Health Balance of Power,” Asia Policy, No. 8, 2009;
