infectious diseases in various parts of China. An accomplished<br />

linguist, Ms. Holz was previously a staff<br />

member <strong>at</strong> the Voice of America’s M<strong>and</strong>arin Service,<br />

where she wrote programming in both Chinese <strong>and</strong><br />

English, to include broadcast programs for teaching<br />

English to VOA’s Chinese audience. Ms. Holz has<br />

studied M<strong>and</strong>arin Chinese in Beijing <strong>at</strong> Peking University<br />

<strong>and</strong> Tsinghua University. She is a gradu<strong>at</strong>e of<br />

Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service<br />

where she studied Chinese <strong>and</strong> East Asian history.<br />

She is currently completing a master’s degree in security<br />

studies <strong>at</strong> Georgetown University.<br />

ROY D. KAMPHAUSEN is Vice President for Political<br />

<strong>and</strong> Security Affairs <strong>and</strong> Director, Washington,<br />

DC, <strong>The</strong> N<strong>at</strong>ional Bureau of Asian Research. A retired<br />

U.S. <strong>Army</strong> China Foreign Area Officer, Mr. Kamphausen<br />

served as the China Country Director in the Office<br />

of the Secretary of Defense, China Branch Chief in the<br />

Director<strong>at</strong>e for Str<strong>at</strong>egic Plans <strong>and</strong> Policy for the Joint<br />

Chiefs of Staff, <strong>and</strong> <strong>at</strong> the Defense Attaché Office of<br />

the U.S. Embassy in the People’s Republic of China.<br />

He has served as a consultant for the Office of the Secretary<br />

of Defense, Department of St<strong>at</strong>e <strong>and</strong> other U.S.<br />

government agencies. His areas of professional expertise<br />

include China’s Peoples Liber<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>Army</strong> (<strong>PLA</strong>),<br />

U.S.-China defense rel<strong>at</strong>ions, U.S. defense <strong>and</strong> security<br />

policy toward Asia, <strong>and</strong> East Asian security issues.<br />

Mr. Kamphausen co-authored the chapter, “Military<br />

Moderniz<strong>at</strong>ion in Taiwan,” in Str<strong>at</strong>egic Asia 2005-06:<br />

Military Moderniz<strong>at</strong>ion in an Era of Uncertainty, with<br />

Michael Swaine; wrote the chapter, “<strong>PLA</strong> Power Projection:<br />

Current Realities <strong>and</strong> Emerging Trends,” in<br />

Assessing the Thre<strong>at</strong>: <strong>The</strong> Chinese Military <strong>and</strong> Taiwan’s<br />
