HAROLD TANNER is an associate professor at the University of North Texas, where he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on ancient, medieval, and modern Chinese history and U.S.-China diplomatic history. His publications and research include China: A History (Hackett Publishers, 2009), Strike Hard: Anti-crime Campaigns and Chinese Criminal Justice, 1979-1984 (Cornell East Asia Series, 1999), and several articles on Chinese criminal justice, as well as articles and conference papers on Chinese Communist strategy and operations in the war against the Nationalist armies in Manchuria between 1945 and 1948. Dr. Tanner holds an M.A. in area studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, and a Ph.D. in Chinese history from Columbia University.
