DAVID LAI is Research Professor of Asian Security<br />

<strong>Studies</strong> <strong>at</strong> the Str<strong>at</strong>egic <strong>Studies</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> (SSI) of<br />

the U.S. <strong>Army</strong> War College. Before joining the SSI, Dr.<br />

Lai was on the faculty of the U.S. Air War College.<br />

Having grown up in China, Lai witnessed China’s<br />

“Cultural Revolution,” its economic reform, <strong>and</strong> the<br />

changes in U.S.-China rel<strong>at</strong>ions. His teaching <strong>and</strong> research<br />

interests are in intern<strong>at</strong>ional rel<strong>at</strong>ions theory,<br />

war <strong>and</strong> peace studies, compar<strong>at</strong>ive foreign <strong>and</strong> security<br />

policy, U.S.-China <strong>and</strong> U.S.-Asian rel<strong>at</strong>ions, <strong>and</strong><br />

Chinese str<strong>at</strong>egic thinking <strong>and</strong> oper<strong>at</strong>ional art. Dr. Lai<br />

holds a bachelor’s degree from China <strong>and</strong> a master’s<br />

degree <strong>and</strong> Ph.D. in political science from the University<br />

of Colorado.<br />

KEVIN POLLPETER is China Program Manager <strong>at</strong><br />

Defense Group Inc.’s Center for Intelligence Research<br />

<strong>and</strong> Analysis. Previously, he was a researcher <strong>at</strong> the<br />

R<strong>and</strong> Corpor<strong>at</strong>ion. Mr. Pollpeter is widely published<br />

on China n<strong>at</strong>ional security issues <strong>and</strong> focuses on the<br />

Chinese space program. He has travelled widely in<br />

Asia, including China, where he lived for 2 years. Mr.<br />

Pollpeter has advanced Chinese language skills <strong>and</strong><br />

holds a master’s degree in intern<strong>at</strong>ional policy studies<br />

from the Monterey <strong>Institute</strong> of Intern<strong>at</strong>ional <strong>Studies</strong>.<br />
