Orbis, Joint Force Quarterly, and Proceedings. He
is coeditor of, and a contributor to, the Naval Institute
Press book series, “Studies in Chinese Maritime
Development.” Dr. Erickson graduated magna cum
laude with a B.A. in history and political science from
Amherst College, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in international
relations and comparative politics from Princeton
University.
PAUL H. B. GODWIN retired as professor of international
affairs at the National War College, Washington,
DC, in 1998. His research specialties focus on
Chinese defense and security policies. Among Professor
