The image of speleology.
The forms of practice.
SUMMARY
Speleology is an activity that has rarely been touched on by research so far, at least
in STAPS or from the point of view of the humanities, which are our limits of reference.
Therefore, it seemed important to us to introduce our research with a general presentation of
the activity in question : this part will allow the reader who is not quite at home with this
practice to get the basic points to understand the remainder of the work. Indeed, the
specificities of the physical environment, the original feature of the scope of interest keep
reinforcing its natural obscurity in the eyes of the public. The speleologist will be able to find,
for his part, a synthesis of the biographical elements upholding a global approach to the
following themes :
- an analysis of the technical problems, according to the parameters of the length of
the course, of the height of the verticals, of the narrowness of the paths, of the aquatic
difficulties and of the rock climbing. Those difficulties enabled us to classify caves. Finally, we
will analyse the accidents in the field of speleology.
- the speleologist's motivations : this paragraph expounds the different kinds of
research which have been brought about on this very theme, the one that has been the most
tackled so far. Several surveys, a few clinical approaches are synthesized, methodological
criticisms and proposals are put forward.
- this research on the motivations leads us to evoke the cultural dimension of the
activity, whose product they are to a large extent. On the other hand, the cultural dimension
takes shape in the systematic planning of the sports practices, that is to say that it has also
an effect on the positioning of speleology as far as the sociological approach to sport is
concerned. It is to be finally met again in the use we can make of it for reintegration or
rehabilitation.
-the classic examples of practices : one of the advantages of speleology is to offer
really various practices, which can combine with one another. Among those, let us quote the
search for virgin galleries ("premières"), the different scientific approaches, the practices as
Initiales in french for "Sciences and Techniques of Physical and Competitive Activities", which come into the
training of coaches and physical education teachers at the University
