the storytelling work has been grounded theory. Grounded theory is
used when the research question is completely open and allows for work
to be adapted and adjusted as it progresses. The work involves searching
for new data until saturation point is reached. When you find a
model/method that enables you to answer the research question the
process is complete. The researcher should ideally not have any insight
into or hypothesis on the area to be investigated. When, as in my case,
the researcher has some degree of understanding but still wishes to carry
out a study it is important to become aware of that understanding and to
discount it from the study, as I have done here.
Storytelling has been used as a method for the preliminary work of
examining previous research, theories, round table discussions, surveys,
interviews and model creation. The story of decision making takes its
form from Plato’s dialogues with three main characters. With a story as
the foundation we can describe the creation of a descriptive model and a
normative model. Creation and the use of narration have facilitated this
work and have increased my own understanding of decision making.
The use of narration is a useful scientific method and a pedagogically effective
tool for my own learning process. It centres on my subjective impression
of the working method with narration as a part of the thesis. My
experiences can be summarised in the following three points, which in
turn address the fifth research question:
• It was demanding (in both time and thought process) to write a
story, even if the aim was not to emulate the quality of a novel.
Trying to put myself into the thoughts and views of several different
people was not easy (as in my Plato-influenced narration).
With three main characters, all being my alter egos, and a number
of guests there was always the risk of the work being splintered.
• Writing a story was in itself a learning process. Being forced to see
the material from different points of view gave me more insight
than if I had merely described it from my own viewpoint. I believe
that learning was enhanced by using narration as a method.
• I learned a lot by dealing with data collection (both theoretical and
empirical) in the story. It led me as a researcher to a new perspective
on the material that I had gathered and described.
With the story as a basis the work of the thesis was carried out in a series
