quired. Expectations can be dealt with by the individual clarifying them
for himself/herself. Clarity is dealt with by the communications plan and
the use of it. Clarity can be achieved through an understanding of
asymmetric information.
The previously named questionnaire was aimed at IT project managers
and the respondents gave a higher evaluation of their own role than
their colleagues did and of the project compared to the organisation. This
is fully understandable given the special situation that a project manager
finds himself/herself in when leading a restricted activity to achieve the
desired result, i.e. an information system. The answers to the survey also
showed that the IT project managers had a low opinion of their own
work and their own importance. There is clearly a general asymmetry
present:
- between project manager and project sponsor/line manager
- between project work and tollgate
- between different projects
- between different individuals regardless of role and position.
Here it can be seen that there is asymmetry even in communication.
When I as an individual receive data I use it taking into consideration a
number of factors, for example knowledge, experience, norms and mood.
The result of this is information. This applies whether or not there is spoken
or written communication. When there are two (or more) recipients
(see figure 5) these will interpret the common data in different ways depending
on their different factors.
