The excavation shall be trimmed in steps-and-berms backfilled with well<br />

compacted solid soil, followed by a minimum 0.25m thick layer <strong>of</strong> properly<br />

shaped boulders (75-150mm) encased in a net <strong>of</strong> galvanised iron wire <strong>of</strong> dia<br />

3mm spaced at a maximum distance <strong>of</strong> 50mm to be laid over the backfilled,<br />

compacted and graded banks.<br />

The GI wire shall be made from steel having tensile strength <strong>of</strong> 400 N/mm 2 and<br />

with a minimum elongation at failure <strong>of</strong> 10%. The minimum zinc coating <strong>of</strong> 200<br />

gm -2 shall be applied on single/ double twisted wire.<br />

The length <strong>of</strong> the above protection shall be equal to the actual bank excavation<br />

edge including damage and extending 2m on either sides. The width <strong>of</strong> this<br />

protection on the slope shall be determined by the following :<br />

• 2m plus the highest water level (recoverable) or upto the top <strong>of</strong> bank<br />

whichever is higher.<br />

• Upto the bottom <strong>of</strong> the crossing or 20m below the highest water level<br />

whichever is smaller.<br />

Bank stabilisation for certain minor water crossings shall be determined by<br />

COMPANY based on nature <strong>of</strong> crossing e.g. type <strong>of</strong> river, canal, major nallah,<br />

flood control banks and other water bodies; type <strong>of</strong> soil, regulations <strong>of</strong> local<br />

authorities; and any other socio-economic consideration evaluated by the<br />

COMPANY.<br />

5.12 The crossing <strong>of</strong> any embankments shall be carried out strictly in accordance with<br />

approved drawings.<br />

No drilling work on embankments shall be permitted without prior written<br />

approval from the competent authorities.<br />
