Alternatively, owner on its own discretion may permit use <strong>of</strong> Magnesium / Zinc<br />

galvanic anodes for protection <strong>of</strong> insulating joints. Choice between Magnesium or zinc<br />

anodes shall depend upon the potential valves on either side <strong>of</strong> the insulating joint.<br />

These anodes shall be sized for the specified design life <strong>of</strong> permanent cathodic<br />

protection system.<br />

6.4.5 The total system including cables, cable termination, anodes/ surge divertors shall be<br />

suitable for the anticipated fault current at the location <strong>of</strong> installation.<br />

6.4.6 Unless otherwise specified on data sheet, the minimum rating <strong>of</strong> grounding cells,<br />

polarisation cells and surge diverters shall be as below:<br />

(i) Grounding Cell<br />

- Type : Zinc, 2 or 4 plate type<br />

- Current rating : Suitable to pass more than<br />

10kA surge<br />

(ii) Polarisation cell<br />

- Type : Solid state or Electrolytic multiple pairs<br />

S.S plats type ground<br />

- Rating : Suitable to pass 5KA or more surge<br />

(iii) Spark Gap Arrester<br />

- Type : Spark gap<br />

- Current, 8/20 wave : 100 kA<br />

- Spark over AC voltage:<br />

- 50 Hz : 1 kV<br />

- Impulse (1.2/50) : 2.2 kV<br />

6.4.7 The grounding cell, spark gap arresters, and polarisation cell system shall be sized for<br />

the design life <strong>of</strong> permanent CP system. The zinc or magnesium anodes meant for<br />

pipeline grounding shall also be sized for the life <strong>of</strong> the permanent CP system taking<br />

into account the current discharge from the anodes. The grounding system shall have<br />

minimum resistance to earth to restrict the pipeline voltage as per NACE criteria.<br />

6.4.8 In case <strong>of</strong> HT transmission overhead lines <strong>of</strong> voltage below 66KV also requisite<br />

mitigation measures should be provided to take care <strong>of</strong> continuous induction <strong>of</strong><br />

voltage interface due to presence <strong>of</strong> transmission line in close proximity.<br />

6.5 CP at Cased Crossing<br />

At cased crossings where casing is coated, the casing shall be protected by sacrificial<br />

anode installations. The sacrificial anode installations shall be provided at both ends <strong>of</strong><br />
