Remark : Case Report: A 74 old widow died after ingestion of an<br />

overdose of lysol. Post morten findings: lower third of the<br />

oesophagus and the whole of the stomach lining were bleached<br />

white, areas of mucosal desquamation, pylorus and duodenum<br />

showed a marked degree of congestion; 30.4 mg/100 ml mixed<br />

cresols in the urine, 48.0 mg/100 g mixed cresols in the<br />

liver; 19.0 mg/100 ml mixed cresols in the blood.<br />

Remark : A 76 year old unmarried woman swallowed an unknown quantity<br />

of lysol. She was found shortly afterwards unconscious, and<br />

despite resuscitative measures, she died within 2 hours;<br />

post mortem findings: oesophagus, denuded of mucosa, was<br />

deep purple; stomach dilated, containing 500 ml chocolate -<br />

coloured fluid, mucosa: dark brown, necrotic; small<br />

perforations on the anterior gastric wall; trachea and<br />

bronchi with mucosal oedema, lungs congested; 90 mg mixed<br />

cresols/100 g liver; 39.6 mg mixed cresols/100 g kidney ;<br />

7.1 mg mixed cresols/100 ml blood.<br />

Remark : Case report: A 46 year old labourer, working in a chemical<br />

factory, had a cresol solution poured over his upper trunk<br />

when he was transporting a tub containing hot cresol. The<br />

lesion consisted of a light brown eschar with well-defined<br />

margine, minimal oedema. He developed gross haemeturia,<br />

oliguria and finally anuria within 24 h, upper<br />

gastrointestinal bleeding within 2 days, on day 4<br />

progressive dyspnoe and tachypnoe, hypertension with blood<br />

pressure arround 200/100 mmHg during the first 10 days. On<br />

day 15 he developed a septic shock with severe jaundice and<br />

renal failure. He was treated successfully and discharged on<br />

day 38 after injury.<br />

Remark : Case Report: A man (50 years old) has drunk cresol solution<br />

to commit suicide. 2 hours later he was found to be<br />

unconscious, cyanotic with methemoglobinemia, blood pressure<br />

90-136 mm Hg; pulse 101/min; light reflex: slow; urine<br />

colour: black brown. Methb increased in the patients blood<br />

drastically within 15 hours. He was treated successfully.<br />

Remark : Workers exposed to organic solvents (i.e. cresol) showed<br />

increased levels of cresol, hippuric acid and phenols in<br />

urine and decreased levels of albumiun and delta-globulin in<br />

the serum.<br />
